Losing a child is something no parent should have to experience. Unfortunately, a Lakeland, Florida family is mourning the recent loss of their 14-year-old daughter after she was struck and killed by a school bus while trying to cross a busy street. As the police investigation continues, the family is dealing with the implications of this fatal accident.

The young girl was attempting to cross West Beacon Road, at a busy intersection. Suddenly, she was hit by a school bus taking a left turn. The bus was being operated by a substitute driver on the day the girl was killed.

Emergency workers arrived at the scene to provide the 14-year-old with medical attention. She was quickly airlifted to a Tampa hospital where she passed away a little over an hour after the accident.

Those who knew the girl say she was active in multiple activities, very well-liked by those that knew her and really enjoying her high school experience. Many, including the girl's family and friends, are having an incredibly difficult time processing the grief over their loss.

One parent who knew the victim has indicated that the intersection where the young girl was hit is especially dangerous. She has said she will no longer allow her own children to cross the street there because those traveling down the road do not slow down or exercise caution even though there are lights indicating the school crossing zone. Additionally, the intersection has never been staffed by crossing guards to ensure the safety of students, according to the concerned parent.

Parents send their kids to school with the expectation that they will return home safely. This young girl's life was cut short because her well-being was put into danger as she attempted to leave school grounds. School administrators have the responsibility to keep their students safe while under their watch.
